Flood’s Story
There is no doubt that the world is rapidly changing around us. Massive shifts in technology, trade and communications are giving birth to not only new ideas about faith, but what it means to be human. Many are beginning to search for a way that is connected and is more attentive to all aspects of life and the world around us. We have found people of all walks of life in Sacramento being drawn towards this kind of faith, and it is in this context that FLOOD Sacramento has evolved.
FLOOD essentially began as a series of conversations and experiments among friends about how to connect our spiritual longings and heritage with the realities of life. Realities that see traditional notions of God as having little relevance to our lives in contemporary society. You see, many of us have discovered that our neighbors and friends have a great deal of misunderstanding and pain about organized religion and Christianity in particular. So we ask ourselves, What does it look like to be a disciple of Jesus, revealing the Kingdom of God to the world around us?
Since 2004 we have gathered in homes, coffee shops, university campuses, warehouses, tents, parking lots, and countless other places to both tell and BE the stories of how God is transforming lives and asking deeper questions about what it means to live as followers of The Way. We’ve also become a hands-on community where love and service is initiated, led, and carried out by individuals and families. From our neighborhoods in Sacramento to villages in East Africa, participants in FLOOD have sought to imagine a different kind of world- one where love triumphs hate and faith becomes of source of life rather than death. This highly participatory and engaging experimentation has led us to understand both the beauty and brokenness of our city. It has allowed us to move to places of greater risk taking and action.
